Maine Trail Crew Leader

Teach and lead a volunteer trail crew doing trail reconstruction work on the Appalachian Trail at remote sites on the mountains ofMaine. Projects include building stone steps, waterbars and retaining walls and as well as new trail. Activities focus on teamwork and learning opportunities for volunteers. Training with stone cutting, stone work, Griphoist rigging systems, First aid, and leadership techniques will be provided. Sorry, no pets are allowed.

Qualifications:

  • At least one season of trail work experience
  • At least one season in an outdoor leadership role
  • Ability to teach trail skills
  • Previous experience using power tools and building rock structures
  • Good health and physical fitness
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Durable sense of humor
  • Ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions
  • Ability to motivate and work with people of all ages and backgrounds

Salary: $12.50 per hour plus housing and meals provided

Dates: May 11 – August 17, 2013

Maine Trail Crew Camp Coordinator

Support operation of volunteer trail crews by planning and preparing meals, purchasing food, maintaining base camp facility, recruiting volunteers, assisting with transportation, and arranging leisure time opportunities. Participate at job sites on a limited basis. Personal vehicle required. Sorry, no pets are allowed.

Qualifications:

  • At least one season working in food service
  • At least one season working in an outdoor recreation setting
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Effective communications skills
  • Ability to function as a team member
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and petty cash
  • Ability to maintain a flexible sense of humor and a safe and enjoyable camp environment
  • Ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds

Salary: $12.50 per hour plus housing and meals provided

Caretakers & Ridgerunners on the Appalachian Trail in Maine

(a) Piazza Rock/Saddleback Mt., (b) Horns Pond/Bigelow Mt. and (c) Gulf Hagas

Caretaker / Ridgerunner Job Description:

  • Meet, greet, register and provide information to hikers on the Appalachian Trail
  • Impart Leave No Trace information on where to camp, how to protect water sources, water treatment, dish washing, fire regulations, etc.
  • Deliver Leave No Trace awareness workshops at campsites to hiking groups
  • Maintain a composting privy system (Horns Pond site) and site maintenance
  • Ridge run – hike north and south of the caretaker’s camp site on overnight trips – to perform the same tasks at other areas

Requirements:

  • Significant long distance hiking experience on the Appalachian Trail
  • Leave No Trace knowledge, skills and ethics
  • Experience working with the public/customer service
  • Good physical condition – able to hike with a 40 lb. backpack
  • Desire and comfort with primitive, solitary, outdoor living and working conditions
  • Practical arrangements for transportation and local days-off housing

Schedule: May 18 through late September or mid-October. All positions work on weekends and holidays, days off are mid-week.

Pay: ranges from $10-$12/hour depending upon experience. Backpacking and camping gear will be provided for the season.
