Information for Campsite Maintainers The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) maintains 45 designated campsites along the AT and its official side trails. This network includes 29 lean-tos. Volunteers with the MATC maintain these campsites, their structures, and related amenities. Below is information as well as forms we ask that you use during your maintenance visits. Please remember to fill out a Work Trip Report that is used to track all volunteer hours with the MATC. From this link, you can also submit “Add Campsite Report” or “Add Leanto Report” to submit your campsite assessment and/or lean-to assessment forms electronically, including photos. Campsite Assessment Form This form should be used at all campsites to track maintenance visits, deficiencies, and work completed. A copy of this form is available here (48 KB PDF) to print and take with you on your visit and fill out on site. Information can be transferred to an electric copy upon your return that will be submitted to the campsite committee. In addition, photos can up uploaded using this form. Lean-To Assessment Form This form should be used at all campsites that have a lean-to in order to track maintenance visits, deficiencies, and work completed. A copy of this form is available here (44 KB PDF) to print and take with you on your visit and fill out on site. Lean-to dimensions do not need to be recorded for every visit after they are initially documented. Information can be transferred to an electric copy upon your return that will be submitted to the campsite committee. In addition, photos can up uploaded using this form. Completed campsite forms and lean-to forms should be submitted to the MATC using one of the following options:

The MATC Campsite Committee works with District Overseers and campsite maintainers to track maintenance efforts as well as coordinate larger repair and construction projects. The “charge” of the MATC Campsite Committee is as follows: The Campsite Committee shall consist of a Chair and 5-9 members, and has the following primary duties:
- Annually review conditions at 25% of the campsites
- Prepare and maintain an inventory and 5-year plan for lean-to and campsite maintenance, repair, and replacement
- Coordinate major repair projects at campsites
- Evaluate the need and appropriateness of existing and new campsites
- Maintain standards and guidelines for lean-tos, privies, and related campsite facilities
- Educate and train overseers and campsite maintainers
