SUMMARY:Volunteers Wanted - Maine Trail Crew
DESCRIPTION:The Maine Trail Crew repairs steep\, rugged\, and degraded sections of the Appalachian Trail\, helping to protect and preserve this treasured resource for future generations. \nVolunteers (18+) are invited to apply to join our paid crew for one or more of the following sessions: June 29 – July 3; July 6 – July 10; July 13 – July 17; July 20 – July 24; August 3-August 7; August 10-August 15; August 17 21; and August 24 – 28 \nProjects run Monday morning through Thursday or Friday afternoon. Crew members must arrive by 4:00 PM on Sunday before their session begins. \nAn enthusiastic and experienced staff looks forward to welcoming you and building trails together.   \nCOME WORK WITH US!   \nMAINE TRAIL CREW   \nVOLUNTEER INFORMATION \nWhat You’ll Do: \nProjects focus on rebuilding and restoring heavily impacted trail sections. Crews use rigging equipment and hand tools to construct stone steps\, install waterbars\, improve drainage\, and stabilize steep terrain. \nWho Should Apply?  \nWe welcome individuals 18 years or older from all backgrounds. SUMMARY:Privy Build
DESCRIPTION:We’re building new privies at Spaulding Mountain and Safford Notch campsites this summer\, and need your help! The materials were helicoptered there on August 6-7; now we just need to build them. Which one we build on what dates is still being determined\, but we are there will be activity on these event dates (unless the weather is poor). The hike access to the campsites is the same; both involved about 2.5 miles of hiking with 1\,225 feet of elevation gain. \nPlease join us! Those of you involved in past projects can attest to the camaraderie\, satisfaction\, and good fun with these projects!

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Backcountry and Outdoor Ethics and Hard of Hearing Awareness Hike
DESCRIPTION:Piazza Rock\nPlease join us Saturday\, October 24\, 2026 for a Backcountry\, Outdoor Ethics (BOE)\, and Hard of Hearing Awareness Hike at Piazza Rock!  \nPlease join us for the second annual Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) and Association of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA). This is an outdoor experience\, led by Julia Neumann\, designed to support and empower those new to hiking or outdoor adventures. Alongside learning about background and outdoor ethics\, Debra will lead a thoughtful discussion on hearing loss and hiking\, including an introduction to basic sign language for trail communication. This hike welcomes individuals with hearing loss as well as anyone interested in learning more. \nTotal Hike: 4.03 miles\, 627ft elevation gain (about 2 hrs 30 mins)  \nParking: Piazza Rock Trailhead\, Rangley\, ME. GPS: 44.8868\, -70.5407  \nThe itinerary for this hike is approximately 5-6 hours long.  \nParking: Meet in parking area at 9:45 am (15min)  \nBriefing: What to expect\, intro to BOE\, trail etiquette\, Debra intro (15min) Hike In (~1.5 hrs)  \nBOE Topic: Traveling and camping on durable surfaces\, discuss at bridge (15min) Day in the Life of a Ridgerunner (if available): Visit the MATC Caretakers dwelling for an interview with Henry about what it’s like being an MATC Ridgerunner (20min) View Piazza Rock: Side trail (25min)  \nLean-to for Lunch: Bring your own bag lunch (privies available here) (30min)  \nHearing Loss and Hiking: Discussion on hearing loss and hiking by Debra Bare-Rogers and an introduction to basic sign language for trail communication (25min)  \nLNT Activity: Leave No Trace Crime Scene. Participants will arrive at the scene of a “campsite crime.” This scenario simulates the resulting chaos from a group of campers who have failed to “know before you go.” Participants will step into the role of environmental investigators tasked with documenting infractions and identifying the LNT principles that were violated (40min)  \nLNT Activity: Trash timeline.
