Support Our Fall Appeal

Please give today to help maintain and protect a precious wilderness resource, the Appalachian Trail in Maine.

Help MATC raise $50,000 to support continued trail, campsite, and boundary land operations.

Thank you for your past support, which has strengthened the Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) and contributed to the stewardship of 267 miles of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.), more than 60 miles of side trails, 47 campsites, and surrounding corridor lands.

We’re excited to share that the new Maine Trail Center in Skowhegan has been built and successfully occupied, this past summer, as basecamp for seasonal employees and volunteers as they worked on the A.T. The Trail Center enhances MATC’s capacity to dispatch trail crews, teach trail maintaining and hiker education skills, and provides critical off-trail housing.

As we prepare for a busy 2026 season of trail maintenance, conservation, and outreach, we’re focused on the following priorities:

●       Build new moldering privies at Avery Memorial, Safford Notch, and Spaulding Mountain campsites. Our volunteers will replace outdated privies (toilets) with an accessible, composting design. In addition, we plan to remove old privy debris from Horns Pond via a helicopter lift.

●       Combat erosion and improve trails by installing water bars, stone steps, and steppingstones at Cloud Pond, Holly Brook, and Joe’s Hole. Our trail crew will complete this work over a nine-week period.

●       Expand backcountry and alpine education through our Ridgerunner program at Saddleback and Bigelow Mountains, and within the 100-Mile Wilderness.

●       Support the second year of our AmeriCorps A.T. Outreach Steward, who will focus on increasing engagement with youth and underserved communities.

We have learned that the MATC will not receive annual trail crew grant funding from the National Park Service in 2026. While we continue to pursue funding from other sources, support from individual donors like you is critical to the success of our mission. Your annual gift, legacy contribution, or monthly donation will help ensure that the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail remains a premier destination for outdoor recreation and that its natural resources are safeguarded for years to come.

Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made by check, credit card, or marketable securities. To donate securely online, please visit: www.matc.org/appeal. Our coordinator will happily answer any questions you may have and can be contacted at coordinator@matc.org.

With sincere appreciation,

Janice Clain, President
